Date: June 11,2019 – Fish Release
The Fish Friend Program releases the salmon fry at Bloomfield Park. Cascumpec Bay Watershed Association participated in a Salmon release on June 11th, 2019. Thirteen students from Ecole Pierre Chiasson joined the event. Thirty students from Bloomfield Elementary School also participated.
Eliza Star Child Knockwood manages Indigenous outreach and education. She works for the Abegweit Conservation Society’s Plamu’k na Kitapina’q (Salmon are our Friends) Program. She spoke about the important relationship between salmon and the Mi’kmaq people. She also discussed how the fish populations are under pressure.
The release began with a smudging ceremony – performed by Lennox Island elder Gilbert Sark. Mr. Sark blessed the salmon, the water, and the students. The students recited a prayer “Water I love you, Water I thank you, Water I respect you.” They then proceeded to the highlight of the event. It was the release of the salmon fry. The whole event was conducted under the watchful eyes of two mature bald eagles soaring overhead.
